Health Levy Contribution Refunds

Posted in Our Blog, Taxation

For the tax years 2008, 2009 and 2010, the exemption threshold for payment of the Health Levy was €26,000; this is €500 per week. If you earned more than €500 in any one week in the year, you would have been liable to the Health Levy but at the end of the year if your cumulative earnings are less then €26,000, you can obtain a refund of the health levy charged during the year.

If you are entitled to a refund for 2008, 2009 or 2010, you should contact the Department of Social Welfare to claim your refund. Details of how to apply for the refund can be found on www.welfare.ie.

You should note that there is a time limit on claiming a refund of the Heath Levy of four years. Therefore, you must apply for a refund of the Health Levy paid in 2008 by 31 December 2012. Any contributions paid prior to 1 January 2008 are outside the time limit for making a claim.
